AFCON 2022 group standings: Updated tables, scores, results & highlights from African championship

The African Cup of Nations begins with a group stage in which the field of 24 teams will be reduced to 16, and there are sure to be some surprises along the way.

As in the Eurocup, the top two teams from each of the six groups (AF Groups) will advance to the knockout stages along with the best four third-parties. Each nation plays three group stage matches and they are ranked by points: three for win, one for draw, and none for loss, with tie-breaks if teams are tied on points (see tiebreak list at the end of this post). .

The knockout group is already predetermined as indicated in the schedule below, and the teams that advance will earn specific spots in the group based on their group’s result. The knockout stages begin with the round of 16 and extend to the final with 30 minutes of overtime and penalty kicks used in the event of a tie after 90 minutes.

AFCON 2022 Group Playoffs

If two teams finish tied on points in the group stage, the following tie-breaks are applied to determine their ranking, according to the official competition rules:

1. Most of the points obtained in the games between the two teams;
2. Goal difference in all group matches;
3. Most goals scored in all group matches;
4. Lot drawing (i.e. random drawing).

If three or more teams finished tied on points at the end of the group stage, the tiebreaker formula changes slightly:

1. Most of the points obtained in the matches between the teams in question;
2. Goal difference in matches between the teams in question;
3. Most of the goals scored in matches between the teams in question;
4. Goal difference in all group matches;
5. He showed goals scored in all group matches;
6. Lot drawing (i.e. random drawing).

A twist in the scenario involving three or more teams: If tiebreaks # 1 to 3 succeed in separating at least one team from the rest, those same tiebreaks # 1 to 3 are reapplied to the remaining teams earlier moving on to criteria # 4-6.
