Just six games remain in CONCACAF World Cup regional qualifying and things are looking good for four nations entering the January 27 fixture list. The top three teams get automatic berths for the 2022 World Cup, while fourth place advances to a play-in match against a team from Oceania.
The undefeated (first, 16 points) surprisingly leads the leaderboard with a barrel trip to face the last place team. But away games in Honduras have been a struggle for the Canadians in the past, and they will travel without superstar Alphonso Davies, who will miss the next three games with post-COVID myocarditis.
The traditional powerhouses are already right behind Les Rouges in the standings. The Americans (2nd, 15 points) can take advantage of any Canada slips when they host El Salvador in Ohio. Mexico (third, 14 points) will have a tougher test on the road in Jamaica, who played hard with El Tri in the first game on Mexican soil.
(4th, 14 points) will seek to be inserted in one of those first three places. But the Canaleros will face a desperate team (5th, 9 points) that is probably facing its last best chance to defend the fourth place currently held by Panama.
The remaining teams are in a precarious position. (6th, 7 points) and (7th, 6 points) have little margin for error and need to string together victories to continue dreaming. In the meantime, he is unlikely to be able to recover from a paltry three-point run and will play the role of spoiler from here on out.
The tiebreakers for the first classification are (1) goal difference, (2) goals scored and (3) most points obtained in games between teams that are tied. The full list of tiebreakers and results for Rounds 1-8 are at the bottom of this post.

How CONCACAF World Qualifying works
Eight nations from the CONCACAF region (North America, Central America and the Caribbean) are vying for three automatic berths to the Qatar 2022 World Cup in the final “octagonal” qualifying round.
The eight countries meet in a round robin format with each team playing the other seven opponents once at home and once away from home. The 14 games in total for each national team began in September 2021 and will end in March 2022.
The top three finishers will earn automatic berths to Qatar, while the fourth-place team heads to an intercontinental playoff with a final ticket to Qatar at stake. Here are the table tiebreakers for teams level on points:
- Goal difference in all group matches
- Most goals scored in all group matches
- Most points obtained in the group matches between the teams in question
- Goal difference from the group matches between the teams in question
- Most goals scored in group matches between the teams in question
- Goals scored away from home (if two teams tie)
- Discipline points (based on yellow/red cards)
- FIFA draw
The Qatar World Cup will be played from November 21 to December 18, 2022.
