It’s kind of crazy to talk of this game as potentially pointless once the dust settles on Sunday. Neither the Steelers (8-7-1) nor the Ravens (8-8) can make the playoffs without help. But the loser of this AFC North Week 18 showdown doesn’t get a chance to get in. That means for the Steelers, this could be Ben Roethlisberger’s last game in black and gold. For the Ravens, it will be up to Tyler Huntley to get them a win to end the year.
Lamar Jackson will be out for the fifth game in a row with a persistent ankle injury, leaving the Ravens understaffed once again. The Ravens are 0-4 in their last four with Huntley leading, losing three of those games (to the Browns, Packers and Rams) by four points combined. The outlier is a 41-21 beating at the hands of Joe Burrow, Ja’Marr Chase and the formidable Bengals. If the Ravens win, they would need a Colts loss to the Jaguars, a Chargers loss to the Raiders and a Dolphins loss or a draw to the Patriots.
For the Steelers, the way forward is a little less unlikely, though it hardly hinges on a Colts loss to the Jaguars. They would need the Colts to lose and the Raiders and Chargers not to end in a draw, which would make it a long shot, but not completely insane.
All that said, this is likely to end up being a disappointing season for both teams. However, once the off-season starts, the shades will be very different. For the Ravens, it will be about recharging and preparing for the return of their star quarterback. While Huntley hasn’t been horrible, he hasn’t had that key moment like Jackson’s touchdown against the Chiefs. Even one of those moments significantly changes the landscape for the Ravens this week. Meanwhile, the Steelers enter an offseason with the looming question of who will be their new quarterback. That question will ultimately be a determining factor in how his 2022 goes, making it a big decision for Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert.
